The Creators of Mo Mushi

Mo Mushi is a collaboration of two Minneapolis screenwriters, Wade Barry and Chris Mulfinger. Working from a concept originally developed by Wade several years ago, the two writers began their collaboration in January 2005 and completed the most recent version of the story in late 2009.

Wade Barry
Writer, Producer, Director and Actor

Comedy and storytelling have been central to Wade’s character since he was a child when he convinced his schoolmates that he was hatched from a dinosaur egg. To this day, that theory has yet to be disproved. He grew up in a rural area of Minnesota, miles from his friends, which gave him no choice but to create imaginary worlds and friends for his own entertainment. This proved critical in his creative development.

He bought his first movie camera at age 13 with money he gained by selling a crop of oats (small grains are still a form of currency in some places). He began making short animated films and eventually realized he had to get out of the country if he wanted to have an impact on the entertainment industry. This led him to the Twin Cities where he attended film school, took acting classes, and tried a short stint at stand-up comedy.

Wade has worked in the television industry for the past 15 years as a producer/director/writer for a variety of factual programs on cable networks including PBS, HGTV, TLC, Food Network and The Travel Channel. Though interesting work, his attempts to add more humor and ramp up character development in how-to programming was met with everything from indifference to downright animosity. This compelled him to explore narrative storytelling and he completed a B.A. in screenwriting from Metropolitan State University in 2003. It was during this coursework that the seeds of Mo Mushi were formed. He met Christopher Fels later that year and, in early 2005, they began developing and writing Mo Mushi, completing it in June 2006. In the spring of 2009, a major revision of the script was launched, bring us to today.

Wade currently works as a writer on the Food Network show Diners, Drive-Ins and Drives.

Christopher Fels
Writer and Musician

A graduate of the “prestigious” School of Journalism at South Dakota State University, Christopher developed an interest in the art of screenwriting during his four years working for South Dakota Public Broadcasting. In the years after public broadcasting, his career has taken him for a journey across the many realms of communications and entertainment.

With stops along the way for media planning, public relations and advertising, Christopher is currently employed as a Marketing Manager for Ameriprise Financial in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota.

While his career has moved into marketing, his passion for writing has not diminished. In recent years, he has done freelance work for several monthly publications, as well as having his short story Temporary Occupation published in the New Blood Anthology in 2005. Mo Mushi is the fourth feature-length screenplay he has contributed to.

Christopher grew up in Norwalk, Iowa but has lived in the Twin Cities for the better part of ten years, with small stints in Denver, Colorado and Lawrence, Kansas during that time as well.

Other “interesting” facts about Christopher:
Worked as Public Relations Manager for SCCA Pro Racing in 2003, getting paid to "watch cars go fast and write about it."
• Plays bass guitar in a Minneapolis band called The Reluctantz.
• Smoked a hookah at an Indian restaurant in Old San Juan in 2003. Nothing meaningful there, just an interesting fact.
• Has never watched any of the Godfather trilogy.
• Saw John Tesh in concert, but has erased the experience from his memory.
• Was once mistaken for Nicolas Cage at a McDonald’s, but the woman behind the counter might have been high at the time.
